Now and again, we all experience difficulties drifting off to sleep but when this becomes a regular occurrence it’s called insomnia. Going without a good nights sleep can leave you feeling exhausted and unable to concentrate sufficiently to perform your daily tasks and if you suffer insomnia for several days at a time then this can adversely affect your mental and physical well being, you then need to know what causes insomnia and what you can do to alleviate it.
There are many methods and techniques to overcome insomnia so there really is no need for people to suffer from this condition.
Firstly, we need to establish what causes insomnia in the first place and analyze the underlying problems that spark it off. Maybe it’s because many people these days lead very busy lives and are coping with all sorts of worry and anxiety that builds up and results in an inability to relax sufficiently to fall asleep. For example, if you are trying to solve a problem and your thought processes are in top gear you may find it impossible to shut it down when you go to bed because your mind is in overdrive.
Some people find that a good solution is to read a book, one that is preferably non-fiction and non-exciting. Maybe an autobiography or reference book will have a less stimulating effect. Read a paragraph or two every night and this should help you to relax and shut your mind off the day’s problems and enable you to drift off.
If the underlying cause of insomnia is because your partner has a snoring problem then perhaps you can persuade them to try some of the anti snoring products available or maybe consider sleeping in a separate room until you can catch up on your sleep.
Another fairly obvious solution is to make sure you have blackout blinds if any light disturbs and if you are troubled by outside noise then maybe playing some soft music could help to mask it. If you have a partner and do not want to disturb them then use earphones.
What Causes Insomnia and techniques To Overcome It
- Getting up and having a cup of milky drinking chocolate and reading a few paragraphs of a boring book before going back to bed.
- If you can, try to establish a routine for going to bed because the body usually adjusts to regular behavior patterns.
- Use your bedroom for sleep only and do not watch TV or computers as this will probably over stimulate the mind
Many of us lead quite sedentary lives these days, especially if we work in offices or drive for a living and because our bodies don’t feel physically exhausted, this can be a contributory factor of what causes insomnia. If for example, you have worked hard at gardening or decorating the house or any other kind of hard physical labor then you will remember how wonderful it is to slump into bed so exhausted that you’re asleep before your head hits the pillow. So, failing hard physical labor, try some exercise before going to bed, a brisk walk or jog around the block or maybe a workout. Then thirty minutes before retiring to bed have a nice cup of warm milky drinking chocolate to help wind down. Avoid alcohol and other stimulating drinks because although they seem to make you feel sleepy, they can very often cause an interrupted nights sleep.
I hope these methods and techniques to help you to understand what causes insomnia work for you but if not and you continue to suffer then it is probably better to seek advice from your doctor.
