Home Remedies To Help You Sleep

There are many causes of insomnia and these are covered in detail in other articles on this site but one major reason in my opinion, is that you are just not physically active enough. Many of us have sedentary jobs, drive from A to B and rarely perform any form of physical activity, which can result in our inability to sleep. This sleep disorder, insomnia,  is  your body’s way of saying it is just not ready to go to sleep yet so maybe the answer is an activity routine that could leave you feeling nicely exhausted and ready for your bed.

If for whatever reason you cannot commit to regular physical activity then maybe you could try some home remedies to help you sleep and natural herbal remedies are worth a try as some are renowned for relaxing the body and inducing sleep.

Here are a variety of home remedies you could try and some are potions and concoctions to use for a relaxing massage and others also to help calm and reduce stress levels to help you sleep soundly.

Try These Home Remedies To Help You Sleep

  • Lettuce – Did you know that the humble salad leaf contains mild sedative properties that can help induce sleep?
  • Chamomile tea – Drink this mixed with a teaspoon of honey before you go to bed. Chamomile and honey are also known to help induce sleep and the honey will help make it taste nice.
  • Kava – A well-known and potent sleep aid used for many years by the people of Polynesia.  Taken in the form of tea is a popular choice.
  •  Milk – Warm milk mixed with honey is a well established home remedy for inducing sleep. You may also like to sprinkle on some cinnamon or freshly grated nutmeg.
  • Valerian – Another herb known for it’s sleep inducing qualities and a good alternative to sleeping pills. This can be found in most good pharmacies.
  • Lavender – One of my favorites because the properties in this plant not only smell divine but are also great in treating sleep disorders. A lovely warm relaxing bath before bedtime using several drops of lavender essential oil in the water will soothe and de-stress you. Also, using a sprayer, add a few drops of lavender oil to some water and spray your pillows with it.  You can also mix lavender essential oil in recommended carrier oil and ask your partner to massage your back  with it…Wonderful!

Be aware when using herbs and essential oils as  some can conflict with prescribed medication you are taking or may not be advisable if you are pregnant and therefore, it is best to consult with your Doctor first before using essential oils or herbs in home remedies to help you sleep.
