We have probably all lain awake in bed wondering when our minds will shut down and let us go off to sleep. Try as you might, thoughts and images are constantly going around in your mind and its impossible let go of them. You toss and turn endlessly trying to get comfortable and before you know it, you hear the birds singing outside and you haven’t yet had one wink of sleep yet. Sound familiar? Well, we will look at some sleep natural remedies that mainly involve food.
Well, you are not alone; many people suffer from bouts of insomnia at some time in their lives but fear not, it can be remedied. There are many factors that can cause insomnia including, worry, fear and anxiety to name but a few and there is more information regarding these other factors listed on this site. Right now, I would like to concentrate on one aspect that might be the culprit in your inability to sleep and that is the food you are eating so, let’s look at some of the many sleep natural remedies in food before you resort to taking sleeping drugs or medication.
Did you know for instance that some food could have a very disruptive affect on your sleep whilst others will positively help you drift off to sleep? As an example, my Grandmother used to say “don’t eat cheese before you go to bed, it will keep you awake” and she was right.
There are different types of food that can positively help you wind down, making it easier to drift into a deep sleep. Remember though, that the digestion of food takes about an hour so keep this in mind when eating before bedtime.
I will concentrate on listing the foods that will help promote a good nights sleep without describing in to much detail, the complicated chemical composition of the food because it will probably just bore you. So, for example, foods containing calcium act as a mild sedative which will help you unwind and these foods include broccoli, sesame seeds, oats and dairy products like milk. Foods that contain magnesium will help to relax your muscles and these include greens.
More Sleep Natural Remedies Found in Food:
- Try eating more bananas because they contain potassium and magnesium, which will help you to relax and unwind. Other fruits like cherries contain melatonin that can help to regulate sleep and therefore try including them in your evening meals. Apples and kiwi fruit will also help promote sleep because they are high in calcium and magnesium.
- This one is an old remedy but it works…..A nice glass of warm milk! Alternatively, if you are not too keen on just plain milk, try drinking chocolate made using milk. Again, high in calcium, which promotes sleep.
- Oats, bread and whole grain cereal contain high amounts of carbohydrates and calcium to help induce sleep. As are walnuts, peanut butter and hazelnuts.
As an experiment, try eating some of these foods and hour before you go to bed for say a week and see if you notice any improvement in your sleeping pattern. It will certainly not hurt to try and these sleep natural remedies found in food could result in you sleeping soundly again without resorting to medication.
